Both of these shows are taking place at Somewhere There, 227 Sterling Road, Unit 112
(just south of Bloor on Ruttan St.). Cost for both will probably be $8 (that seems to be the going rate at Somewhere There these days).

After that I have an out-of-town performance coming up at Supercrawl in Hamilton, ON on Sept. 10th. More about that later.

A "review" for the Six Heads "Official Bootleg" cassette appeared in Offerings magazine this month. Since it's not online I'm reprinting it here:

Well it's garbage night in Vectorspace and Six Heads' Official Bootleg is picking up the trash.

Inside its liquid filled bathtub garbage ship its lethargic dremel operator travels from pile to pile with wind chimes and filthy teddy bears tied to its front grill. The brahhppts and blips of the slowly breaking down garbage ship is accompanied by the odd piece of space junk it's collecting. On top of all this there is someone that is projecting the pulse of his squadron and his name is the Squeaker and he has a couple of drugged ferrets in his pocket.

Mr. Scriver's all-too-accurate account of our operations leads me to wonder if he may in fact be a stowaway aboard our little cosmic garbage scow! Come to think of it, I did notice the laundry hamper was wiggling around a bit more than usual! Time to break out the electric cattle prod...

Nart!

I've been thoroughly enjoying my recent purchase of Michael Dower's great mini-comics anthology Newave! The Underground Mini Comix of the 1980s (Fantagraphics Books, 2010)! The other day, I came across this in it which I thought relevant here:

Nart is a painless concept which advocates the elimination of logic on an ethereal plane and transfers it to a pseudo-logic on an epidermal plane. Within the nucleus of nart is the preoccupation with juxtaposition of expectation via absurdist symbolism plus a combination of stereotype and exaggeration dealing with the commonplace carried out to the furthest common denominator while adopting a "pataphysical" rather than metaphysical attitude interwoven with evasion and confusion more so than unison and clarity.

In simpler terms, nart can be explained and retained thusly...

Jeezlaweez, these shows do have a tendency to creep up on me! Almost forgot to announce this one! Six Heads is playing tomorrow evening (Sat. Dec. 11) as part of the Wintage 5-Year Anniversary Fest. Here are the details:

Wintage is celebrating 5 years of releasing some of the most progressive & experimental sounds by Toronto artists, as well as those from across the globe. This fest will celebrate new Wintage releases by local free-punk duo Preanderthals, harsh noise legend Knurl, Matt Dunn’s Transcendental Rodeo and a split between free-spazz duo Gravitons & Sonic Youth front man Thurston Moore!

Carnacki CD

Just received a package in the mail from our dear friend Gregory Scharpen out in Berkeley and contained within said package were several copies of the new Thomas Carnacki CD "The Disappearance Of This Terrible Spool"!

As if that weren't exciting enough, "Gansevoort Two-Step," which is track 4 of this CD, includes a fairly sizable contribution from your humble Recordists (i.e. me and Sherri)!

Thomas Carnacki is the alter-ego of Mr. Scharpen and this is the second Carnacki CD on his own Alethiometer Records label, following the 2006 release of the "Far Voyage From A Placid Island" CD. Both discs are excellent and can be purchased from the man himself ( http://www.myspace.com/thomascarnacki ) or through Aquarius Records in San Francisco, Other Music in New York, and in the case of the "Far Voyage" CD, through CD Baby and ICR Distribution (Europe).

"Gansevoort Two-Step" is comprised of edited excerpts from the second of two collaborative Thomas Carnacki/Recordists performances which were presented in New York City in May of 2008 as part of the 2008 Whitney Biennial. Both collaborations were quite fruitful and yielded a wealth of useful material and we are discussing the possibility of a full-length release of some sort. We'll let you know when and if that seems imminent.

Two performances coming up this weekend!

First off, although it seems difficult to comprehend how this could have happened, Magic Tits will be making their second public appearance this Friday evening at Smiling Buddha! Someone has obviously taken leave of their senses (possibly me, for starting this project in the first place).

The latest issue of the Croatian online comix magazine Komikaze has some really great stuff in it (as do most of their issues) but this particular strip by Dalibor Baric is blowing my freakin' mind!

I've been working on a détourned comic that uses anagrams myself...hmmm, should I bother to finish mine? Yeah, mine will be different. But Baric's is sooooooo good! Love it!

Speaking of détourned comics, at TCAF earlier this year I handed out a bunch of flyers to promote the idea of a détourned comics anthology called "La Bande Détournée". Didn't get much response so I put the idea on the back burner for the time being (as you may know, I have a lot of projects). But last weekend at Zine Dream 3 I was speaking with Marc Bell and he said he was thinking about giving me some material for "La Bande Détournée". I'm a big fan of Marc's work so if he's interested then maybe I should take the project off the back burner and put some heat under it! Seeing Baric's inspiring work also makes me think I should push the LBD anthology idea.

Recordist update #1 for Aug. 6, 2010:

Six Heads just got back from an appearance at Electric Eclectics Festival in Meaford, ON. Had a blast and totally rocked our set (if I do say so myself)! Lineup for the performance consisted of James Bailey, Linda Feesey, Sherri Lyn Higgins, Peter Mosher, myself and Joda Clément (filling in for Colin Hinz who wasn't able to make the gig).

We are also working on a much more comprehensive online archive of Recordist artifacts, not surprisingly called "The Recordist Archive", but it will likely be a number of months before it sees the light of day. Eventually, the Myspace page and the archive site will work together to provide a more thorough coverage of The Recordists' collective activities than any of our previous websites.

Songs of the New Erotics "DU(BU)ET" performed live at "Performance Night 4.5", Toronto, Mar. 6, 2010.

DU(BU)ET is a "duet" with one of the performers absent. The live performer is W.A.Davison (aka Songs of the New Erotics) using hand-manipulated vinyl. The absent performer is DAS of Big City Orchestra who is represented in the performance by a cassette player and backing tape. The backing tape was composed by W.A.Davison using raw audio material submitted to the S.O.T.N.E. project by DAS sometime in the mid to late 90's (thanks DAS! The subject matter is very personal to Mark and Jason as it reflects modern parenting and childbirth." Jason will be in attendance, Mark in spirit.

"The Unveiling" is a series of one-night-only soirees/exhibitions, held monthly (more or less) in the back room of The Ossington Bar, which playfully reinvent a romantic and antiquated concept - that of a single artist "unveiling" their latest creation for a gathering of colleagues, collectors, critics, and cultural elite. The series is organized and hosted by local artists/curators William A. Davison and Robert Dayton.

The Unveiling is presented in such a manner that it becomes highly performative with its’ climactic turning and twisting of the tropes of the auctioneer and the charming element of surprise. Indeed, for those who know the work of either Davison or Dayton , a humorous, subversive approach is not at all unexpected. "At the same time," Davison continues, "we have a deep respect for the work we will be presenting and we feel that this series will provide a highly unique, entertaining, and engaging way for some of our favorite artists to show their recent creations."

There will also be snacks, oh, there will be snacks.

BIOS:

Jason Mclean was born in 1971. He graduated from the Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design in Vancouver BC , 1997. Over the past few years, his diverse practice has included drawing, sculpture, installation, sound performance and mail art. Much of his work contains collaborative elements.

He was recently chosen by MacLeans Magazine as one of the top ten visual artists to watch for in Canada . His work has been displayed at Colette, Paris; Richard Heller Gallery, Los Angeles; Mother's Tank Station, Dublin; Bee Studios, Tokyo; Museum of Contemporary Canadian Art, Toronto; Neon Gallery, Brosarp, Sweden; Spencer-Brownstone Gallery, NY; Abel Neue Kunst Gallery, Berlin.Perugi Art Contemporenea, Padova, Italy; Fondazione Bevilacqua La Masa, Venice

His work has been featured in many important magazine such as Modern Painters, Flash Art, Border Crossings,Adbusters, and I.D.N. magazine. He also has had a published book project with Nieves Books, Switzerland and has submitted drawings to other publications such as Nog A Dod ,Montreal/Nyc, Glomp #9, Finland and the Ganzfeld #5 Japanada.

Mark DeLong was Born in 1978 in New Brunswick , Canada . He is a self taught artist working in a variety of mediums including drawing,painting,sculpture,video and installation.

BIO
Fiona Smyth is a Toronto based artist exploring popular and alternative cultural icons and imagery. Smyth's work probes these timely societal, sometimes intense and always relevant topics with a sense of humour, wonder and catastrophic consequence. She also employs surrealist, abstractionist, spiritual, feminist and pro-sexual strategies to achieve her unique aesthetic. Her use of media also reflects this range of interest by using different formats from which to engage her audience including comics,
illustration, painting, animation, music covers, web-based art and her fabulous murals. Smyth has exhibited in Taichung /Taiwan, Venice/ Lido, Jeollabuk-Do/ South Korea, New York City, Winnipeg and most recently The Parkdale Gyre at INDEXG in Toronto.

Definitions

As part of my Nov. 21st presentation at No Face, No Problem, I played a round of "Definitions" with the audience. The results are recorded here:

anal - to put your butt on each other.

apron - to leave slowly.

barf - to create or assemble from materials.

bog - to tidy or clean when one is supposed to be doing something more important.

dog - a pharmacological sleeping aid.

dream - noun: an object one acquires when in a state of turmoil. Falls from the ceiling.

duh - a thing smaller than a bread box.

emit - a special leotard-like strip which holds the toaster down before popping.

fear - too many Johnny's.

help! - is the feeling you get after a night of climbing trees and vomiting from the upper-most branches.

hotdog - adverb: swiftly, quickly and calmly.

kittens - verb: thinking with your eyes open while sleeping.

lugubrious - _____ (blank).

magnify - a great anticlimax.

oink - a drink that comes from a cow's udder.

oversion - not after the best before date.

poo - refers to the battle in 1893 in the fields of Archubacht. Colloquially means to burn diamonds in April.

redemption - red liquid in the body.

sebaceous - a vessel used for nice wine.

sexy - a large tree grown for its strong wood.

sheepish - what hangs lightly.

sick - a state of non-abrasive wonderment resulting in unexplored emotion.

thing - a form which transcends all living matter.

tiger - is the best thing that came out of 1992.

time - to simmer forcefully.

tintinnabulation - noun: sort of like an expensive thing you could buy, like a nice thing, only it's not so great.

yet - an obsolete currency.

_____ (blank) - a murky, deserted place.

In the game of "Definitions" each player writes a single word on the inside of a folded piece of paper. The slips of paper are then passed around the circle, or shuffled and redistributed, and each player then writes a "definition" (in the style of a dictionary definition but funny, serious, dramatic, poetic, absurd, stupid, whatever) on the outside of the folded piece of paper (without looking at the word inside, of course!). The slips are then unfolded and read out loud to the group.

The above definitions will be added to our "Recordist Lexicon" which we started back in the late 90's as part of IBRI's weekly open meeting series (IBRI = the International Bureau of Recordist Investigation, 1994 - 2004).

Unfortunately, I was not able to record the names of all of the participants. If you were there and would like to be credited just send me an email - davison(at)recordism(dot)com. the name thing

For many years now, I've been almost exclusively using my real name "William" rather than the nickname "Bill" which I grew up with. I say almost exclusively because up to now I have allowed old friends and family to continue calling me "Bill" and have, in a few rare instances, used the name "Bill" myself when it seemed like doing otherwise would create problems.

HOWEVER...as of today, Oct. 4, 2009, I will no longer answer to the name of "Bill" nor will I accept the use of the name "Bill" in reference to me under any circumstances.*

So sayeth William. Get used to it!

The Living Archive

Just letting you all know I have a small write-up on Don Campau's Living Archive of Underground Music, a really interesting website that presents Don's own personal history of cassette-culture and underground music along with a growing number of recollections from other tape networkers.

The history of cassette-culture and homemade/DIY music has been poorly documented up to now. The Living Archive is one very good step in the direction of addressing this problem and filling in the gaps in cassette-culture's written and pictorial history. The site also serves as a great resource for finding other sources of information and for exploring what is currently happening with many of the scene's practitioners. Well worth paying a visit!

Barbarians vs. Cowboys

The lake of mud quivered slightly as she emerged, slowly and obliquely angled. Her bonnet remained hopeless but fear gripped the throng of onlookers and hippies sat in the back in a haze of goats' hair. The sack remained motionless, humming slightly for the return of England and other outmoded extravagances. Questioning whether it was possible to put both legs in one compartment, Lady Anthracite blinked and fluttered in the fog. "It's all a sham!", she moaned as the mysterious lights slowly moved under her smock. Scarlet flowerpots fell from a tremendous height only to ascend rapidly again mere seconds before crashing. Protective magic might serve to hide those unsightly folds of flesh worn by the Barbarian tribes but around here the cowboys have got it all wrapped up!

The Bearded One!

Feathers and paint were the sole components of his elaborate and ornate vehicle. The wheels were aristocratic planets that creaked in a vaguely tuneful way as they turned the butterfly wings. Older men scuttled across the ocean floor like crabs while the young ones employed inflatable roses to float to the oily surface. Loose or tight, molded infants appeared in the wings, their plastic faces gleaming under shapeless garments or microscopic organisms. Magpies grew more formal and transparent as evening descended. A crippled mathematician disintegrated into a picturesque fog. The mechanisms were inspected carefully and cleaned of any errant hares and toads but witchcraft still seemed the more viable option under the circumstances. Oak or willow poppies clattered noisily in the driveway where earlier civilizations once provided bugs with flotation devices. Queen Elizabeth now appeared from under a rock. "Behold, the Bearded One!", she exclaimed while extraordinary discretion kept her from revealing her magnificently lathered apparition.

This Monday at The Ossington is also the one-year anniversary of Intervention Monday (our generous hosts!) so it's an extra-special evening and should be a lot of fun! Bring your fave drawing implements and your collaborative spirit.

New dance, new music collaborations and improvisations, featuring:

from Toronto — Butoh dancer Meiko Ando with l’Orchestre Royal Odradek (musicians Andy Yue, James Bailey, Michelangelo Iaffaldano, Rod Campbell and William Davison, improvising on homemade instruments made by Michelangelo Iaffaldano)

from Hamilton — new music ensemble Fossils (David Payne, Matthew Boughner, Daniel Farr, Rob Michalchuk and Steve Smith), plus dancers Tanis MacArthur and Ann Milne with fiddler Ronald Weihs

plus visuals from metallurgist Shane Turcott (”Steel Image of the Month”) and Judith Sandiford (lighting and real-time video mixing)

plus special guest appearance: Eugene Martynec (of Artword's "Eugene's Sunday Series") on laptops
